Established on 18 August 2008 during the Silver Jubilee year of Kokan Women Youth and Students Development Central Society (KOWYAS), the Acharya Balshastri Jambhekar College of Special Education was founded with the vision of providing quality education, training, and appropriate rehabilitation for children with intellectual disabilities. The institution also aims to promote research in the field of special education while creating employment opportunities for youth across the Konkan region.
Recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India, the college introduced the D.Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation)- D.Ed. S.E.M.R. programme. It has emerged as the first dedicated special teacher training centre serving the districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, making a significant contribution to the development of special education in the region.
With a strong foundation of quality teaching, experienced management, and practical field-based learning, the college has earned a credible and respected position in the field of special education.
The college has an RCI-approved intake capacity of 25 students. Since its establishment, more than 350 trainees have successfully completed their training and are now working as special educators in various institutions.
To ensure that special educators remain updated with current knowledge and continue to strengthen their professional skills, the college organizes Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) programmes every year in collaboration with the Rehabilitation Council of India.
So far, the college has conducted 29 CRE programmes, with participation from more than 2,000 special educators from different districts of Maharashtra, Goa, and Belagavi.
The college is equipped with essential facilities for physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychological testing. These resources support both the educational process of children with special needs and the intellectual assessment of learners.
For residential trainees, the well-equipped Khemka Hostel provides accommodation facilities. Separate group accommodation is also available for women trainees.
In addition, trainees from socially disadvantaged communities can avail scholarship support through the Special Social Welfare Officer, Ratnagiri.
The college is committed to expanding beyond diploma-level education and is taking progressive steps towards higher education and research in special education. With the vision of bringing all special education programmes under one roof, the institution plans to introduce the following courses in the future
